Fresh Durian Preservation for Export: Challenges, Solutions and an Industry Conference Worth Following

In 2025, China’s imports of Vietnamese durian surpassed Thai durian for the first time. However, when placed side by side with Thai durian on the same retail shelf, the limitations of Vietnamese durian are still quite visible.

The first issue is rapid spoilage. Problems such as cracked shells, mould, uneven ripening, hard flesh or internal quality defects still occur frequently. A short shelf life makes distributors more cautious when purchasing in large volumes.

The second issue is inconsistent appearance. The peel can easily darken, the gloss is not always attractive, and fruit shape is not always uniform. When displayed in fruit stores, Vietnamese durian can still be at a visual disadvantage compared with Thai durian.

The third issue is unstable eating quality. The flesh may have a higher water content, visible moisture on the surface, a lower proportion of dry, golden flesh, and a less distinctive aroma.

Even so, many of these issues can be improved through proper post-harvest handling and preservation technology. With the right investment in post-harvest treatment, the quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese durian can be significantly enhanced.

The Green Light Core fresh durian preservation technology from Zhongshan Xianhe Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is introduced as one of the notable solutions for improving the market competitiveness of Vietnamese durian. According to the company, this technology system is safe and highly efficient, and is a durian preservation product that meets FDA standard requirements, helping support the legal, safe and compliant import and export of durian and other agricultural products.

Zhongshan Xianhe Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is a national high-tech enterprise, a Guangdong provincial enterprise supporting essential livelihood supply, and a leading agricultural enterprise in Zhongshan. The company’s founding team mainly comes from the former National Engineering Technology Research Center for Agricultural Product Preservation, with 20 years of experience in the research, development and application of fresh preservation technologies.

The company currently holds two national invention patents, has participated in the formulation of two national food safety standards related to fruit preservation, and has mastered a range of core technologies in agricultural product preservation and processing, including preservation technologies for prepared foods.

In Guangdong, Xianhe has built a large-scale production base for edible preservation coatings and natural preservative agents. In Guangxi and Shaanxi, the company works with specialised OEM factories for special fertilisers and physiological preservation agents. In Hainan and Maoming, Guangdong, Xianhe has developed a full cold-chain fresh lychee export processing and preservation centre. The company has also established tropical fruit preservation technology promotion centres in Vietnam, Thailand and several other international markets.

In 2025, Xianhe Biotechnology received the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in China’s commercial system. In the same year, the company also participated in a major agricultural technology research project under Guangxi’s “Jianfeng Plan”.

It can be said that Xianhe is a company with practical technological strength in tropical fruit preservation, experience in implementation within overseas production areas, and support from national-level technology projects. Rather than remaining at the level of theory, Xianhe is an agricultural high-tech enterprise directly serving international production regions.

From 13–16 July, the Second Asia Durian Conference in Vietnam and the Vietnam–China Durian Supply–Demand Matching Conference are expected to take place in Ho Chi Minh City. Mr Yang Li’an, General Manager of Zhongshan Xianhe Biotechnology Co., Ltd., has confirmed his attendance and is expected to deliver a keynote presentation at the conference.

At the event, Mr Yang Li’an will provide a systematic introduction to the technical principles, core advantages and practical application results of the Green Light Core fresh durian preservation solution. For businesses facing challenges in quality control, shelf life and post-harvest losses, this presentation is expected to offer practical and directly relevant insights.

Vietnamese durian is entering a period of significant market reshuffling. Market regulations are becoming stricter, and consumers are becoming more knowledgeable. Supply chains that are unstable or unable to meet quality requirements will gradually be pushed out of the market. In contrast, businesses willing to invest in quality and preservation technology will be better positioned to secure their place in the next stage of growth.

In addition to the main forum, the conference will also feature Vietnam–China dialogue sessions, corporate presentations, buyer matching, exhibition and trade networking, as well as field visits. It is designed as a practical platform for businesses in the industry to meet partners, connect resources and find suitable buyers.

The Organising Committee sincerely invites domestic and international durian brands, importers, wholesale market operators, e-commerce buyers, new retail representatives, cold-chain logistics providers, packaging companies and related service providers to register and participate.

From 13–16 July in Ho Chi Minh City — we look forward to meeting you at the Second Asia Durian Conference in Vietnam.
